I own several copies of Silverfast in equal number of incarnations as scanners were supplied with them. I previously ran a business that had a drum scanner and an Imacon Flextite 848 so am fairly familiar with scanning. It’s worked flawlessly since Im extremely impressed with the quality and especially for £200!
#Silverfast plustek upgrade
Whether it was in my SF a/c or at the boot up of SF8 but eventually I was offered a free upgrade to SF 9se plus. Then randomly at some point I got a message, I dont remember where. I spent hours trying all sorts uninstalling/reinstalling etc etc. Nothing all I could get was demo mode or pay 69euros. I tried installing SF9 thinking it might let me use same serial.
#Silverfast plustek full
It wouldnt scan a preview all I would get was horizontal white noise like a detuned telly and what it would scan was always a weird crop which I couldnt seem to adjust to get the full tranny in. It kept crashing every 2 min either just after you hit the scan button or as it finished scanning.
#Silverfast plustek Patch
I even installed the patch from SF and still useless.

I loaded it up and it was a total nightmare. This can often lead to problems with new software particularly usb connected devices (regular time machine backups essential).Īnyway the scanner arrived this morn with SF8 se plus. Im using a 2009 4,1 mac pro flashed to 5,1 and patched catalina. Picked up a new/unused one yesterday, as in bought by someone and never used off ebay for £200. If you are worried about not having infrared dust removal, I can only see it being useful for people who scan many rolls per session/need to scan really fast, or for if your film has scratches. Obviously this setup isn't for everyone and I'm not sure how well the dynamic range holds up to other software, but if you're like me and trawl millions of reviews before actually not settling on anything, the cheap plustek 8100 and Silverfast 9 work out perfectly for amateurs and those who want to play with their scans a bit. I didn't even have my air blower on me and dust was hardly an issue. I normally edit my photos a little so I pushed the histograms around and ended up with a great scan just as sharp as the lab's noritsu with good control of the colours. I was even surprised that I could use negafix to choose the film stock. I didn't read any instructions and found it very easy to find the settings I wanted and get a nice looking scan super fast.
#Silverfast plustek install
The install was pretty slow but once it booted. I decided finally to download the SE 9 demo and see this supposed ancient software for myself.

I was looking into all sorts of workarounds and open source software. I found many suggesting Vuescan over Silverfast which was over 3 times the price, then more saying Vuescan was actually bad and to get lightroom and negative lab pro on top of that! My head was swirling at all the costs. Panic started to set in as I realised I would probably have to upgrade to Silverfast 9 and pay more money, hen I started to trawl some forums and reviews. A copy of Silverfast 8 was included in the box however it was a CD and I have no drive. I was between the plustek scanners and aiming for a used one with infrared dust removal, however an 8100 popped up for so cheap I decided to just go with it. I recently bought a scanner since I moved country and sending film off to the lab is no longer cheap nor easy, so I decided to finally be more involved with the process. I decided to write this after reading so many harrowing comments and posts about Silverfast and juggling between DSLR scanning, a flatbed and a plustek.
